Introducing Limit Texas Hold 'em

While the guide provides the strategy of the game, it does so at a beginner's introductory level. It requires no knowledge, and even includes explanations of the basic terms involved. Step One

Limit, or Fixed Texas Hold 'em is the most popular poker game in the world. It can be played by up to 10 players and is a fair introduction to new players, as busting is not automatic for those with little experience. That having been said, skill is a factor. Pot odds, helpful as may be, are not enough to guide a new player through the game and leave unscathed. Players must follow their opponents, not only the pot odds. They should also avoid being overly tight. Aggressiveness, too, should be used selectively.

Step Two

A wise strategy is to mix tight with aggressive styles, depending on the game situation at hand. Play starting hands and mind your positional advantage. Focusing on the early stages, pre-flop and flop play, while the opponents make mistakes, will leave you at a comfortable situation at the later stages of the game, your bankroll under control, opponents having folded and the first real decisions ready to be made.

Step Three

Creating the best five-card hand is the goal of Limit Texas hold 'em, and community cards are the key to doing so. All players around the table share these cards, five of them. Players are dealt two cards each facing down (hole cards), and two cards facing up. Players complete their hands with the community cards

Step Four

After the two hole cards are dealt, face down, the dealer places three cards in the middle of the table. They are the flop. Next is the turn card, a fourth card dealt to each player, facing up. The final, fourth card dealt around the table, also face up, is called the river. No antes are involved, meaning there is no initial pot. But blinds are of similar nature. Since dealers rotate around the table, the blinds, both little and big blinds, are placed by the two players to the left of the dealer. The player to the immediate left of the dealer posts the small blind and the next player to the left posts the big blind. After the two hole cards are dealt, the next player to the left of the big blind faces several options, betting-wise: calling the big blind, raising, or folding. Then each player around the table must do the same, until the betting cycle ends, namely fold, call, or re-raise. The betting cycles repeat after the flop, after the turn, and after the river, starting with the first player still in the game to the left of the dealer. Checking is allowed, as no blinds were placed. When betting cycles are complete, the remaining players show their hands and the best hand takes the pot.
