Ambitious online money transfer company hires Paddy Power Betfair’s Breon Corcoran as new boss

UK fintech company WorldRemit today confirmed the appointment of former Paddy Power Betfair CEO Breon Corcoran as its new Chief Executive after weekend reports that he would become the new boss of the rapidly growing digital money transfer business.

WorldRemit was founded in 2010 by Somaliland entrepreneur Ismail Ahmed. Mr. Ahmed was studying in London at the time and was forced to travel across the city in search for an agent to transfer money to his family who lived in a refugee camp in Ethiopia. The transactions were extremely costly and usually required months to be completed, but Mr. Ahmed’s family needed the money.

Frustrated by the complex remittance process, he set up WorldRemit to storm the international remittance market. He spotted an opportunity in the quick growth of mobile money accounts to grow his business. Today, WorldRemit serves more than 800,000 customers from more than 50 countries who send money to millions of people in around 150 countries. Supporting migrants send money from developed countries to family and friends based in emerging economies has been the main focus of Mr. Ahmed’s company.

WorldRemit’s founder is currently its Chief Executive, but once Mr. Corcoran steps in, Mr. Ahmed will assume the post of Executive Chairman. Mr. Corcoran left major gambling operator Paddy Power Betfair this past January after sixteen years at the company and its predecessors.

He first joined Paddy Power in 2001 as Managing Director of its Non-Retail (Digital) operations. He was appointed as the company’s Chief Operating Officer in 2010, but left in 2011. In 2012, he joined rival gambling operator Betfair as its CEO. In 2016, he was appointed as the Chief Executive of the combined Paddy Power Betfair. He had an instrumental role in what was praised as a successful merger of the two major gambling companies.

Mr. Corcoran surprisingly announced his departure from Paddy Power Betfair last August and left his post in January 2018 to be replaced by Peter Jackson. Prior to stepping down, the former gambling CEO drew quite some ire from the UK retail betting industry as he supported openly the proposed cut of the maximum stake on FOBTs to £10 or less from £100.

Mr. Corcoran said in a letter to Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Minister Tracey Crouch dated September 2017 that the FOBT issue has become so toxic that

“only a substantial reduction in FOBT stake limits to £10 or less will address societal concerns. I am confident we could operate our retail business successfully and profitability under such circumstances. Other well-run operators should be able to do the same.”

Fintech Unicorn

With Mr. Corcoran now at the helm, WorldRemit is expected to soon become the UK’s newest technology unicorn, that is a start-up worth at least $1 billion. The company has received more than $200 million in funding since it was founded and some of its investors have included TriplePoint Venture Growth, Accel Partners, and Silicon Valley Bank. It most recently raised funds in a $40-million round that was led by LeapFrog Investments.

Earlier in October, the company extended its footprint across Africa by launching online bank transfers in Botswana, Chad, Zambia, Mozambique, and five more countries. WorldRemit has revealed that the transactions that it has handled to Africa this year have increased 75% year-on-year. Its fees range between 2% or 3%, which is significantly less than major banks for the same type of transactions.

The UK-based company says that its growth has accelerated in 2018 and it expects its annual revenue to top £95 million, up from £60.5 million in 2017. With the expansion of its reach and its rapid overall growth, the company believes it is in a strong position to “leverage the increasing demand for cashless payments.”

Commenting on the appointment of Mr. Corcoran as the new WorldRemit CEO, Mr. Ahmed said in a statement that with their “goal of delivering a better and safer experience for people sending money home” and the former gambling boss’ “reputation for developing a consumer-first culture makes” they will be able to build on their vision.”

Mr. Corcoran said that “with tailwinds like the global adoption of new technologies combined with growing remittance flows, there is enormous potential for WorldRemit’s global expansion.”

Mississippi casinos praise pigskin as September sports betting soars

Mississippi casinos praise pigskin as September sports betting soars

mississippi-sports-betting-revenue-septemberMississippi’s legal sports betting market reported wagering handle quintupling in September as a new NFL season drew throngs of punters to the casinos’ betting windows.

Figures released Monday by the Mississippi Gaming Commission (MGC) show the state’s licensed commercial casino operators generated sports betting turnover of just under $31.8m in September, up from a mere $6.3m in the month of August, the first month of legal wagering in the state.

Mississippi sportsbooks reported winning $5.3m from the state’s bettors versus just $645k that the books kept in August. The books reported a statewide hold of 17.3%, a borderline obscene figure when compared to August’s already respectable 10.3% hold.

Nearly $23m of September’s sports betting handle was wagered on football, up from just $1.3m in August. Slightly over $4.5m was spent on parlay cards, more than tripling August’s $1.4m, while baseball generated handle of $3.75m, only around $450k higher than August’s total. Adding insult to injury, baseball’s win rate was in negative territory for the month.

Mississippi’s September betting figures are dwarfed by those reported in New Jersey, where handle topped $184m and revenue — the actual kind, i.e. not counting pending wagers — hit $18.8m. But unlike Mississippi, New Jersey has online and mobile wagering options, which accounted for over half of betting handle last month.

Despite the significant sports betting improvement, the state’s overall casino gaming revenue totaled $182.8m in September, up nearly 8.7% from the same month last year but only around $1.1m higher than August 2018’s total. Statewide slots revenue totaled nearly $147.4m while tables games added just under $26.8m.

Of the state’s three gaming regions, the dominant Coastal region posted September’s biggest year-on-year improvement, rising 13% to $108m. The Northern region was up nearly $3m to $51.9m, while the Central region was down nearly 4% to $22.9m.

None of the above figures include contributions from the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ three casinos, which don’t report their fiscal performance to the MGC.

Sam Miller Leads 23 Hopefuls into WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Main Event Day 3

UK’s Sam Miller leads final 23, last year’s champion Blake Battaglia out of the race

The field of this year’s WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Hammond Main Event was reduced to just 23 players after Day 2. The tournament originally drew as many as 1,094 entries, but it is now just a few hours away from crowning its victor.

Day 2 was played on Sunday at the host casino. It kicked off with 236 hopefuls, who were led by Day 1A chip leader Michael Perrone with 649,000. While Perrone had a good advantage over the first stages of Day 2 action, the player could not secure a spot among the Day 3 survivors. He eventually busted in 24th place, good for a payout of $11,386.

As mentioned earlier, the Main Event attracted 1,094 contenders over its two starting flights. Its field thus generated $1,657,410 for the prize pool. The top 117 finishers will walk out with a payout, min-cashes starting from $2,718. Garrick Ballard became the unfortunate bubble boy. The player was eliminated in 118th place during Level 18.

There were a number of notables to bust on Day 2 without taking a share of the prize pool, including 11-time gold ring winner Maurice Hawkins, and WSOP gold bracelet winners Ben Keeline and Scott Bolhman.

Among those who made it to the money but failed to lock their seat into Day 3 were Ryan Phan, who finished 11th in the WSOP Main Event this summer, Ralph Massey, Will Bery, and Jeff Fielder, among others. Fielder was running pretty well over the course of Day 2 play, but eventually came in 31st.

Who Bagged the Day 2 Chip Lead?

As mentioned earlier, only 23 players will advance into the final day of action. They will be led by UK’s Sam Miller, who has just secured his first cash from the WSOP Circuit and is eyeing his first title from the series. The player built a solid stack of 3.535 million throughout Day 2, good for 88 big blinds at the beginning of Day 3 play.

Miller actually ended Day 2 of the tournament as the only player to pass the three million mark. Zachery Schneider, a one-time gold ring winner, bagged the second largest stack last night of 2.8 million. Two-time gold ring winner Nick Pupillo completed top three of the chip counts chart with 1.85 million.

Other notables that will return to the host venue later today to compete for the title and the gold ring include Giuliano Lentini, Anna Antimony (pictured), and Aaron Massey, among others. Action is set to resume at noon local time at the host venue. The remaining hopefuls will play down to a winner.

Blake Battaglia topped the event’s field this time last year for a cash prize of $332,020. The player entered this year’s edition of the tournament through Day 1A and secured a spot into Day 2. He ran pretty deep, but was eventually eliminated in 48th place, good for a payout of $5,005.

DeClub Macau wants to build the world’s first blockchain casino

DeClub Macau wants to build the world’s first blockchain casino

A new partnership has been formed that could see the introduction of the next generation of casinos. DeClub, a casino management company out of Macau, has connected with Malta-based investment firm Wide Rich Global Company to bring blockchain and gambling closer together.

DeClub Macau wants to build the world's first blockchain casinoAccording to a company press release, DeClub indicates that Wide Rich wants to buy the gaming company to build the “world’s first blockchain-based casino gaming hub with fully integrated online and land-based casinos.” To fund the purchase, Wide Rich is offering an initial coin offering (ICO), which it hopes will allow it to attract as much as $1 billion.

In a white paper about the project, Wide Rich states, “The tokenization of chips, casinos and their surrounding entertainment service providers will be able to build a pan-gambling business ecosystem together, so that people with varying business needs – from tourism, to business meetings, to shopping – can all gain easy and cost -effective access to customized and prestigious services on their mobile devices.”

During the ICO, Wide Rich will issue the “DEC” token, giving purchasers rights to host and invest in cash lending pools. At the same time, DeClub will offer its own token, the “NNC,” which are stablecoins that can be redeemed in order to cover goods or services at casinos.

Macau has a fairly strict anti-ICO policy. The Monetary Authority of Macau prohibits banks and other financial institutions from providing services to any entity in the crypto industry; however, private-sector ICOs are not included in the ban.

This isn’t the first time that someone tried to combine crypto with casinos. Dragon Corp introduced an ICO last year that raised $500 million for its Dragon Coin, part of which was to be used to build a floating casino. Those plans, however, never made it off the dock after the main contractor backed out.

There’s no reason to expect this latest project to advance, either. Earlier this year, Macau’s gaming regulator said that cryptocurrency would not be accepted as a means of currency in Macau. If Wide Rich wants to see their project become successful, they’ll need to find a different location, or risk the fury of more than a few investors when the project stalls.
